Keep
Up the Pressure for NCLB Reform!
The signers of the
Joint Organizational Statement on No Child Left Behind are having a
major impact! Soon the House Education Committee will discuss and vote on
a new Elementary and Secondary Education Act/NCLB.
The House Education
Committee discussion draft for a new ESEA/NCLB responded to some FEA
recommendations, particularly for multiple forms of assessment. But there
is still a long way to go to meet the principles in the Joint Statement.
And some supporters of the current law are working to block fundamental
reform. Now is the time to counter those who claim the current law is the
only way to do “accountability" or to improve schools. Let's keep pushing
to fix the federal law.
FEA has a
two-page
response to the House discussion draft. Use it to create your
own letters. Tell the House Education Committee and your Representative
that the improvements from the draft must be kept in the final bill, but
many deeper changes are still needed.
Have your members
and constituents tell their Representatives to rely on the
Joint Organizational Statement on NCLB to guide their votes on
reauthorization of NLCB. For more detail, they should consult the
Forum on Educational Accountability recommendations.
You can send an
email letter to
ESEA.Comments@mail.house.gov. Find your Representative’s
contact information at
www.house.gov and send a copy to her or him. Faxes are best, but
emails are still good.
